Information About A Cathode Ray Oscilloscope

Why is it called as a cathode ray oscilloscope? It is made up of a vacuum tube with a cathode and an anode at the opposites ends of each other.

A cathode is a negative electrode while an anode is a positive one. Since the cathode emits electrons or cathode rays, this electronic instrument is called as a cathode ray oscilloscope. A cathode ray oscilloscope or oscilloscope for short is widely used in many different sectors. Oscilloscopes are used in medical, engineering, telecommunications and manufacturing sectors.

They are also indispensable for testing and designing electronic devices. To put it simply, a cathode ray oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument. Physically, it looks something like a small television with input and output connection areas and one small screen. An oscilloscope that displays a graph is called as a single trace oscilloscope.

In the case of a dual trace oscilloscope, it can display two separate graphs or traces on the oscilloscope screen. However, the dual trace is more costly compared to the single trace one. In fact, an oscilloscope, immaterial of whether it is a single trace or dual trace one, is quite expensive compared to other electronic testing devices.

A cathode ray oscilloscope could be a digital or analogue one. The main difference between an analogue and a digital one is the device called ADC. An ADC or Analogue to Digital Converter converts analogue signals to digital or binary codes before display on the oscilloscope screen. The digital one is less commonly used compared to the analogue oscilloscope although it has additional data processing systems.

You can connect this oscilloscope to a computer for processing your digital data and printing out your saved data anytime. However, since this sort of oscilloscope captures signals that may happen once or twice, many people prefer to use the analogue one. The analogue oscilloscope captures signals in real time or as they occur. This function is indeed very useful for testing and other purposes.

An oscilloscope normally shows two-dimensional graphs. The display of an oscilloscope has many small squares or grids similar to a piece of graph paper. One grid is one centimeter by one centimeter in size. You can view signals of voltages. The vertical axis depicts the voltage of a signal. The horizontal axis shows time or some other component of voltage.

The diagrams displayed on an oscilloscope are not limited to voltage graphs only. Any other formula that is closely related to voltage like potential difference could be displayed as well. What is the use of a graph on an oscilloscope? By looking at the pattern of the diagram, the speed of the signal, the interference of the signal and other properties, one would be able to study certain electronic circuits or even electronic devices.

Since the formula for voltage is closely connected to both current and time, calculations for time, voltage and time can be done. By performing such calculations, scientists or others can test devices or carry out certain experiments. For example, an automotive engineer uses the oscilloscope to determine the vibrations of a car engine. You might also interested to read how to use oscilloscope article.
